De Jong is new captain
13 July 2012
Siem de Jong is Ajax’s new captain. Frank de Boer made the announcement on Wednesday after SC Veendam-Ajax (1-5). The 23 year old midfielder takes over the band from Jan Vertonghen, who left last weekend for Tottenham Hotspur. Theo Janssen and Vurnon Anita will take over the captainship in De Jong’s absence. Both midfielders are reserve captains.
De Jong wore the band last week during practice matches against Huizen, Oldenzaal and FC Emmen. It was a logical next step to the ambition that he had voiced last season. At that time, the blond midfielder regularly showed his desire to be captain. “Even then, when things were going on, I enjoyed getting involved”, says the Ajax player. “I often did that with Jan (Vertonghen), André (Ooijer) and Theo (Janssen). Now there’s only Theo and me left, and different guys will step in to do that.”
