Ajax won its second practice match of the season in Oldenzaal on Wednesday. The national champion was too strong for third class team VV Oldenzaal, winning 0-11, at De Thij sports park. Ajax grabbed its first official prize of the season. Araz Özbiliz had the greatest contribution to the Vrienden Cup 2012 win, scoring four goals.‘A few phone calls, some raffles and a draw, and you’re playing against national champion Ajax. A gift from the VriendenLoterij. We happily took it. You can’t get any better than that’, was the foreword in the program folder. This match against Ajax was indeed a unique event for the third class team from Oldenzaal. To this day, Ajax’s first visit in 1971 is one of the highlights of the club association’s 98 year old history.
With Davy Klaassen as centre forward, Aras Özbiliz on the right, and Viktor Fischer on the left, the attacking line was Ajax’s youngest. In the first eighteen minutes, all three of them made their mark. And in Özbiliz’ case, he did it twice. It was clear early on: the third class team was going to be eaten alive by Ajax. After Viktor Fischer’s early opening goal (header), Klaassen and Özbiliz each scored from close by.
At 0-4 on the scoreboard, Oldenzaal keeper Lars Venema got a few minutes to take a breather midway through the first half. His team mate Niek Bosma had the opportunity of a lifetime 28 minutes later, but, face to face with keeper Jasper Cillissen, the Ajax keeper won the showdown with the escaped Oldenzaal player with ease. On the opposite side of the field, Thulani Serero restored order: 0-5. After that, Fischer (beautiful volley), Özbiliz and Klaassen each raised their personal scoring balance. The score at halftime was 0-8 at De Thij sports park.
‘I promised the guys that if they won by ten or more goals, that they could stay out until midnight on Thursday night”, said coach De Boer after the second friendly match. “If it was twenty goals or more, then they could stay out until one, and from thirty goals, until two in the morning.”
There were several changes to both teams’ line-up after the break. Frank de Boer altered his team in seven positions, and his colleague Peter de Vries brought in nine new players. At Ajax, third keeper Mickey van der Hart made his debut. Lorenzo Ebecilio took over the centre forward position. With fresh reinforcements, it wasn’t until the 54th minute that the scoreboard changed. Substitute Lesley de Sa beat substituted keeper Marc Heskamp with a spot on shot into the near corner: 0-9.
Internationals Jan Vertonghen, Ricardo van Rhijn and Daley Blind made their entry half an hour before the end. After the first training in De Lutte, they clocked their first playing minutes of the 2012-2013 season. They saw first-hand how Özbiliz scored his fourth, and Ajax’s tenth, goal in the 68th minute. Fifteen minutes before the end, European Championships referee Björn Kuipers pointed to the middle line for the eleventh time. Fifteen minutes later, Ajax was hoisting the Vrienden Cup.
“In the end, I can’t say very much about it”, said De Boer when asked what this huge victory means. “I’d have liked to see more goals. When the goals come so fast, you think that you can get twenty of them. But we got a bit stuck after then ninth one.”
Ajax concludes its training camp in De Lutte on Saturday afternoon with a practice match against FC Emmen. Until then, various practices are scheduled on Thursday and Friday at SV De Lutte.
