AEGON Future Cup: Ajax & Bayern München
27 March 2013
The AEGON Future Cup will be held again, for the fourth year in a row, at the Toekomst sports park during Easter weekend this year. In four reports, Ajax.nl will present the tournament participants. In this first edition: host Ajax B1 and the B-juniors from Bayern München.
FC Bayern München
Close, but no cigar. That’s the story for Bayern München’s u/17 team at the AEGON Future Cup. The German team has made it as far as the semi-finals in each of the three times they’ve participated, only to be eliminated in that round. They’ve won the consolation round finals twice, and finished fourth once. Not a bad record by any means, but after these results, the delegation most likely has one aim and one aim only for this year: to reach the finals. Considering Bayern’s current ranking in the U17-Bundesliga Süd – the team was in seventh place in mid-March – that’s going to be quite a challenge. But the truth is that the German team is coming to Amsterdam with a busload of talent. With perhaps the new Toni Kroos, Philip Lahm or Thomas Müller in the wings – each of whom is now a starting player in Bayern’s top team, but was once a pupil in the Rekordmeister academy.
Another interesting fact: the current coach of the under 17 team is Marcus Sorg. Although you wouldn’t expect this from a youth coach, this trainer has already coached in Germany’s top football league: the Bundesliga. Sorg was responsible for SC Freiburg for six months, after which he was dismissed due to poor performances.
Ajax
Host Ajax B1 has already won the AEGON Future Cup twice. The first time was in 2010, when they beat China under 17. The second time was in 2012, when they defeated Manchester United in penalty kicks. In summary: expectations are high again this year. B1 coach Orlando Trustfull spoke of a worthy battle earlier on this website. “The best guys in their countries are coming to the AEGON Future Cup. For our guys, it’s another great moment to measure themselves and to see where they stand. The value of this is enormous. In any case, I’m expecting a lot and I hope we go far, because of course that’s also nice for the spectators.”
